Facts on Heart Disease and Stroke in Utah
 

Heart disease and stroke are the first and third leading causes of death in the U.S. and in Utah. They are also the leading cause of disability.

  • About 3,500 Utahns die each year from heart disease and stroke¹.
  • In 2009, heart disease and stroke accounted for 25 percent of all deaths¹.
  • In 2008, hospitalization costs for heart disease and stroke alone were $573 million, with an average cost of $33,000 per hospitalization².

Are Utahns at risk?
In 2009³

  • 23 percent of Utah adults had been diagnosed with high blood pressure
  • 26 percent of Utah adults had been diagnosed with high cholesterol
  • 9 percent of Utah adults smoked
  • 7 percent of adults had diabetes
  • 43 percent of adults did not meet recommended guidelines for physical activity
  • 51 percent of adults were overweight or obese
  • 23 percent of Utah adults reported eating at least 5 fruits and vegetables a day

Surveillance helps us to understand:  
  • How many Utahns have a type of heart disease, such as high blood pressure, or have experienced stroke
  • How many Utahns have risk factors for heart disease and stroke, such as obesity/overweight, low physical activity, and cigarette smoking
  • Subpopulations that have higher rates of cardiovascular disease compared to the general Utah population, such as older adults, men, and people who live in certain geographic areas
  • How Utah compares to the U.S. in terms of heart disease and stroke
  • How the impact of heart disease and stroke changes over time
